As the Society has continued to grow, its members and volunteers can do research worldwide; their website's objective is to extend the Society's mission to an online, global audience. Mount Vernon is a city in the county seat of Franklin County, Texas in the northeastern part of the state. The population was 2,662 at the 2010 census. The area was first settled in the mid-1840's, the first town was originally called Keith and was renamed Lone Star in 1850. Although the name was not officially changed to Mount Vernon until September 1875, the town was generally known as Mount Vernon much earlier than that. Mount Vernon is located at on Interstate 30 between Dallas and Texarkana.

The mission of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce is to promote economic and community development and improve the quality of life and business climate for the citizens for Mt. Vernon and Franklin County.
